Canoeing in Asturias

In addition to hiking and cycling trails through mountains and forests, the northern region of Asturias is also gaining popularity as a destination for active sports. One of them is canoeing. Asturias has its own corresponding federation and, of course, many places where you can learn it.

Canoeing is especially popular near the Asturian towns of Cangas de Onis and Arriondas. Most of the first of them lies on the territory of the Natural Park of the Peaks of Europe and two large rivers flow through it. A river also flows along the second town, and not only water sports are practiced with it, but in the summer they also catch salmon, which splashes here in abundance.

Rowing on the Selja River

The river mentioned in the previous paragraph is one of the largest rivers in Spain. In addition to picturesque views, it is also distinguished by areas of the so-called “white” water.

Celja first gained public attention as a canoeing river back in 1930. Then a group of tourists decided to take a trip downstream. And by the mid-40s, amateur rowers began to come to the river, bringing curious spectators with them.

By the end of the 20th century, already a traditional annual event was born here – the International Festival-Competition for Descent on the Selja River. It began to be organized every second Saturday in August.

Currently, local rowing competitions take place on a stretch of river located between two bridges. One of them is located in Ribadesella, the other in Arrionas. Every year these competitions attract a huge number of people who want to watch them. Probably, this day can be called the most significant sporting event in the Asturian calendar.

Canoe for beginners

Those who are just getting started with canoeing can also take part in the International River Descent. For this there is a calmer and safer route. And at the end of the descent, beginners will be invited to spend several hours paddle-surfing, cutting the river waters on a paddle board.

Of course, Asturias also have a huge variety of schools where the art of canoeing can be taught to anyone. Among others, the “pioneer” of this sport in Asturias stands out – “La Escuela Asturiana de Piragüismo”. This school has existed since 1990 and, in addition to canoes, offers many other sports activities.
